Complete List of Retired Crayola Crayon Colors

Welcome to the Retired Crayola colors posts. Did you know there are over 500 Crayola retired color names? There are a few ways a color is "retired" at Crayola. The actual color is retired or the the color name is changed. Either way the colors can be rare and highly collectible.

How does Crayola retire colors?
A brand NEW COLOR can be added or removed from the crayon line up. For example Bluetiful was added to the line up and Dandelion was removed August 2017. Bluetiful was a newly discovered color.  There is a middle ground where Crayola adds a smell or glitter to the color. Is this a new color or an existing color with an additive? For the purpose of classification I am treating these additive colors as new colors because their behavior on the paper is different.

How does Crayola retire color names?
Crayola changes the name of colors either temporarily or permanently:
  • Crayola permanently changes the name of a crayon for a contest or other reason.
  • Crayola temporarily changes the name of existing color for a; promo, brand, commemorative set, contest or themed box.
What are the retired Crayola colors?
Here is the list of all the retired Crayola colors. I have divided them up into the following categories. I have tried to include a swatch of every color when it is known. To find the current Crayola colors click here. Good luck finding them all!

Retired Colors
It can be hard to distinguish unique colors during Crayola's early days.  Crayola went through many different box types and colors before they streamlined into their current color spectrum. Some colors appeared to be the same, but were named differently For the purposes of this list I am not going to guess what colors were the same or different. I will list the color name and when it was retired. Here is a swatch page of the retired colors. Click here to get it.

  2. I just went through some old crayons, and mixed them with the new ones to find out which colors I had pairs with. I found an untouched dandelion. Curious, I started looking up the history of crayons, and found out that it was retired. Now I'm searching to see how I can get my hands on other discontinued ones!

  3. WOW!! I just went through your entire list of crayon colors. This must have taken you several months or even years to compile. I stumbled on your site quite by accident (I was looking for info on making stain glass creations, which unfortunately, are way out of my price range) and I am certainly happy to discover this. I am thoroughly impressed by your hard work. Thank you so much for posting this information!

    2. Flesh is Peach now. Lemon Yellow, along with the equally amazing Maize, Raw Umber, Blue Gray, Orange Red, Orange Yellow, Green Blue and Violet Blue back in 1990 as it introduced 8 new "vivid" colors, but honestly, I really liked the subdued colors they retired and wish they'd bring them back

  11. Hello! I have a memory of a blue crayon called "macaroni blue" from my childhood. I remember thinking it was a strange name for a blue but later thought it might have been a reference to kraft mac n cheese boxes. However, I can find absolutely no reference to it on the internet. I'm wondering if it may have been "marconi blue" and maybe part of cape cod collection (marconi beach). Trying to figure out if I completely made this up...

  15. I have vague memories as a 90's kid opening a pack of crayons or using bundles of old crayons in a basket or tin and seeing colors like maize, thistle, and blue grey, and wondering whatever happened to these colors as I stopped seeing them in the newer collections.

I remember the colors were very drab and unremarkable, but they did have interesting names. I was also able to get my hands on a 120 count box that carried the color dandelion back in 2017, and to this day I have never opened it.

  20. Anyone know anything about these three colors?

Pizza Pie in the Sky Blue
    Green Pepper
    Mozzarella Yellow

I found these three along side a Dandelion yellow while looking through a little container of old crayons my husband had when he was a kid and we have been searching for where these colors came from but we can't find anything!
