How does Crayola retire colors?
A brand NEW COLOR can be added or removed from the crayon line up. For example Bluetiful was added to the line up and Dandelion was removed August 2017. Bluetiful was a newly discovered color. There is a middle ground where Crayola adds a smell or glitter to the color. Is this a new color or an existing color with an additive? For the purpose of classification I am treating these additive colors as new colors because their behavior on the paper is different.
How does Crayola retire color names?
Crayola changes the name of colors either temporarily or permanently:
- Crayola permanently changes the name of a crayon for a contest or other reason.
- Crayola temporarily changes the name of existing color for a; promo, brand, commemorative set, contest or themed box.
What are the retired Crayola colors?
Here is the list of all the retired Crayola colors. I have divided them up into the following categories. I have tried to include a swatch of every color when it is known. To find the current Crayola colors click here. Good luck finding them all!

Retired Colors
It can be hard to distinguish unique colors during Crayola's early days. Crayola went through many different box types and colors before they streamlined into their current color spectrum. Some colors appeared to be the same, but were named differently For the purposes of this list I am not going to guess what colors were the same or different. I will list the color name and when it was retired. Here is a swatch page of the retired colors. Click here to get it.

Sources: A big thank you to Ed Welter at www.crayoncollecting.com and all the other collectors that have kept track of the colors throughout the years. I also used my personal collection to find the color names. Please let me know if you find more colors and if there are any errors, it is a huge list!
Do you have any tips on how to find retired colors? My husband's favorite is Dandelion and the couple that we have are starting to get stubby. Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteWe have a crayon collecting group and ebay is always excellent!
DeleteYou can prob find them on Ebay. I had bought a huge box of dandelion back when they announced it was retiring.
DeleteI WILL REMOVE DANDELION MY 96 PACK>:(
DeleteI saved burnt sienna from retirement
DeleteI just went through some old crayons, and mixed them with the new ones to find out which colors I had pairs with. I found an untouched dandelion. Curious, I started looking up the history of crayons, and found out that it was retired. Now I'm searching to see how I can get my hands on other discontinued ones!
ReplyDeleteI love ebay for this and we have a crayon collecting group on facebook.
DeleteeBay rocks
DeleteWOW!! I just went through your entire list of crayon colors. This must have taken you several months or even years to compile. I stumbled on your site quite by accident (I was looking for info on making stain glass creations, which unfortunately, are way out of my price range) and I am certainly happy to discover this. I am thoroughly impressed by your hard work. Thank you so much for posting this information!
ReplyDeleteThere's a crayon collecting group and we share info with one another. Putting this list for my website took a long time definitely.
DeleteGosh I'll never understand retirement of lemon yellow ! And does "flesh" still exist, I can't figure out (obviously it should be renamed if it is still extant )
ReplyDeleteFlesh was retired. Lemon yellow is such a prett name.
DeleteLemon
DeleteFlesh is Peach now. Lemon Yellow, along with the equally amazing Maize, Raw Umber, Blue Gray, Orange Red, Orange Yellow, Green Blue and Violet Blue back in 1990 as it introduced 8 new "vivid" colors, but honestly, I really liked the subdued colors they retired and wish they'd bring them back

ReplyDeleteI have a 96 come box of crayola crayons that I've has for many many years. In it are 4 crayola Metallics and 4 crayola Gel FX crayons. The metallic are named. Steel blue, sheen green, big dip o' ruby and cyber grape. Ring any bells? Also, the Gels are black papered but NO names. Any ideas on what those could be?? Just email me with any response if you can @gmail. Thanks.

DeleteAre there any hex codes for the colors retired in 1990, 2000, and 2004
ReplyDeleteHello! I have a memory of a blue crayon called "macaroni blue" from my childhood. I remember thinking it was a strange name for a blue but later thought it might have been a reference to kraft mac n cheese boxes. However, I can find absolutely no reference to it on the internet. I'm wondering if it may have been "marconi blue" and maybe part of cape cod collection (marconi beach). Trying to figure out if I completely made this up...
ReplyDeletemmm macaroni beach?
Deleteman, I wish I was in 2003 before August 31 :(
ReplyDeleteI would save Magic Mint and name the Mango Tango crayon: American Cherry
Wasn't there once a turd-muckley-dung crayon? I'm positive it was in packs in the 80's, but can't find it on any list
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard of raw umber
ReplyDeleteoh really, raw umber is like umber but raw.
DeleteI have vague memories as a 90's kid opening a pack of crayons or using bundles of old crayons in a basket or tin and seeing colors like maize, thistle, and blue grey, and wondering whatever happened to these colors as I stopped seeing them in the newer collections.
ReplyDeleteI remember the colors were very drab and unremarkable, but they did have interesting names. I was also able to get my hands on a 120 count box that carried the color dandelion back in 2017, and to this day I have never opened it.
Put back all of the retired colors and also put names on Star brite and Gel fx
ReplyDeleteI WANT T NAME SHOCKING PINK; party balloon pink
ReplyDeletetickle me pink?
ReplyDeleteI have a dandelion that has no rapper and a thistle that is in my tub of 1000000 crayons
ReplyDeleteAnyone know anything about these three colors?
ReplyDeletePizza Pie in the Sky Blue
Green Pepper
Mozzarella Yellow
I found these three along side a Dandelion yellow while looking through a little container of old crayons my husband had when he was a kid and we have been searching for where these colors came from but we can't find anything!
