There are many patents associated with these pencils. It is crazy how much science goes into making art supplies, especially erasable art supplies. Basically the pencils leads are "free of wax or derivatives of wax" that would "resist removal from paper fibers". A lubricant is added to the pencil to make the pencil lead not as hard and easier to lay down on the paper. Crayola also invented a new eraser that would not hurt the surface of the paper.
