How do the fabric crayons work? Basically the fabric crayons are made from a different formula making the crayon a marking crayon instead of a writing crayon. In the patent, it says if the crayon is used on paper it will smear. The crayon is comprised of: Carnauba wax instead of paraffin wax, the normal wax used in crayons; a triglyceride, usually a tallow which makes the crayon soft; and a stearic acid. When the crayon marks come in contact with the fabric "the crayon material impregnates the fabric and encases fabric fibers." When the crayon is heated it unknown exactly what causes the mark to become permanent, but hypothesized that the combination of all the materials create "chemical hooks on the fabric". Back when the crayons were first released Crayola would include a kit with a fabric item to color. Now they release them by themselves.
